Guilford Wins Twice at Tornado Challenge

HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. – Guilford College's volleyball team won twice Saturday at the Tornado Challenge, hosted by Brevard College. The Quakers rallied for a 20-25, 25-18, 26-28, 25-17, 15-6 win over Greensboro College and turned around to beat Meredith, 25-22, 25-23, 12-25, 13-25, 15-11.

Greensboro (1-6) mounted a late rally in the third set to take a 2-1 lead. The Pride trailed 23-20 before roaring back to win six of the next eight points. The Quakers (6-2) outscored Greensboro, 11-2, in the fourth set to force a decisive fifth frame where their momentum continued. Five Pride errors helped Guilford open an 8-2 edge. Greensboro got back to within 8-5, but no closer as the Quakers won seven of the next eight points and the match. The contest featured 30 ties and 13 lead changes.

Christian Ritter paced Guilford's offense with 17 kills and 32 digs, which equaled her personal best and the 10th-best total in school history. Khaira Bolden added 10 putaways and two blocks. Morgan Tompkins also had 10 kills, plus eight digs. Michaela Allred added nine digs and Tina Eucker had a match-high 35 assists. McKinley Durham picked up 27 digs.

Sarah Egbers' 15 kills led the Pride. Alycia Artis added nine kills and 14 digs. Tori Belcher collected 28 digs.

Ritter stood tall again versus Meredith as the junior put down 19 kills and picked up 22 digs, both match highs. Bolden added a personal-best 12 kills and three blocks. She got hot down the stretch of the first set with four kills, including the set-winner, after the score was 20-20. The pair accounted for 32.5 of Guilford's 61 points in the match. Eucker notched 38 assists, three service aces, and 16 digs. Durham picked up 20 balls on defense and also had three aces.

Guilford overcame a 14-10 deficit in the second set and rallied to win. The Avenging Angels (5-3) rebounded with convincing wins in the third and fourth set before the Quakers opened the decisive set on a 5-2 run. With the fifth set knotted at 11-11, the Quakers claimed the next four points, including two Durham service aces that clinched the win.

Meredith's Caroline Corey shared match-high honors with 19 kills and also had two aces. Avery Bowman recorded 28 assists and Cathy Delano served up six aces for the Angels. Lauren Phillips picked up a team-high 19 digs. Haley Reeg had nine kills and four blocks.

Coach Emily Gann's Quakers host Hollins University Wednesday (9/12) at 6:30 p.m. in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference match.
