WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Guilford College's Sommer Fanney and Cheyenne Wright continued their strong starts to the indoor track and field season Saturday at the Wake Forest Invitational at the JDL FastTrack. The non-scoring event featured a mix of NCAA Division I, II and III teams.
Fanney, a senior and the reigning Old Dominion Athletic Conference track athlete of the week, ran a personal best time of 11 minutes, 19.64 seconds in the 3,000-meter race. She placed 19th among 40 runners and had the second-best mark among Division III contestants.
Wright, a sophomore who set the school standard in the 400 meters last Friday, turned in a 1:07.36 Saturday, the third-fastest mark in Quakers' history. She placed 43rd of 53 competitors. Wright also had Guilford's best time in the 200 (29.24), which ranked 52nd in the field and third-best in school history.
Freshman Carmen Curtis made her college debut in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.74 seconds, the sixth-best Guilford time in history. She finished 64th among 75 entrants. Teammate A'lexus Newkirk followed four spots behind in 68th place with a time of 9.04 seconds. Newkirk led Guilford in long jump with a leap of 4.20 meters, which match her personal best and the seventh-longest jump in Quakers' history.
The Quakers compete at Roanoke College's Finn Pincus Invitational next Saturday (1/27).
