Houston Set Hurdle Mark as Quaker Men Competed at 49er Classic

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Guilford College track and field teams opened the outdoor season at the 49er Classic this weekend. Hosted by UNC Charlotte at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Center, the event featured NCAA Division I, II and III and NAIA teams.

On Friday night, Juwan Houston set a new Quaker mark in the 110M hurdles. His time of 15.51 bested the 1971 mark of 15.61 by Deaton. He was 35th of 66 hurdlers in the race.

Triple jumpers Wanya Alford and Jeremiah Hedrick stole the headlines for the GC men on Saturday. Alford leaped 13.47 meters for the second-best Guilford mark. Hedrick was close behind with a 13.43 measurement, the third best among all-time Quakers. The Guilford duo was 19th and 20th respectively of the 35 competitors.

The Guilford track and field teams compete next at the Dr. Jack Toms Invitational, hosted by Lynchburg College. The two-day meet begins on Friday, March 23.
