Guilford Gains 7-2 Men's Tennis Win Over Hampden-Sydney

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College's Tyler Mercier and Clayton Hamilton pulled out three-set singles victories in the Quakers' 7-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's tennis win over visiting Hampden-Sydney College Monday.

The Quakers (8-6, 5-1 ODAC) won for the sixth time in eight matches and defeated the Tigers (2-2, 2-2 ODAC) for the first time since 2007.
Mercier, the reigning ODAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week, posted a 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 win over Hampden-Sydney's Kevin Calhoun for his seventh straight singles win. Hamilton claimed a hard-fought three-set win over the Tigers' Ian Sammler at third singles. Mercier and Hamilton teamed at first singles where Calhoun and Sammler snapped the Guilford tandem's seven-match winning skein, 9-8 (7-5).

Freshman Turner Votipka continued a solid season with a straight-set win at second singles. He and Colin Rapp posted an 8-3 triumph at second doubles. Ben Nelson also won twice for the Quakers with victories at sixth singles and third doubles.

Ryan Davis accounted for the Tigers' other point with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Rapp.

The Quakers visit league-rival Randolph-Macon College Friday (3/30) afternoon in a match rescheduled from February 19.
