ASHLAND, Va. (10/23/10) -- Thaddeus Scruggs rushed for 162 yards and two touchdowns and Drake Sanders added 112 yards and three scores in Randolph-Macon College's 59-21 Homecoming football win over Guilford College Saturday. The pair helped the Yellow Jackets rush for 353 yards and six touchdowns to improve to 7-1 on the year (3-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC)).
Guilford (0-7, 0-3 ODAC) turned the ball over five times, which led to 31 Randolph-Macon points.
Sanders capped the Yellow Jackets' opening drive with a four-yard touchdown run and added a three-yard score later in the period after David Fetter recovered a Quakers' fumble on Guilford's 13-yard line. Scruggs scored his first touchdown late in the opening quarter, which opened a 21-0 Yellow Jackets' lead.
Guilford rallied to within 21-14 in the second period before Randolph-Macon struck twice within nine seconds to take a 35-14 halftime lead. The Quakers got on the board on Billy Watkins' 16-yard scoring pass to Ben King and pulled to within 21-14 after Brad Gayhardt returned a fumble 88 yards for a score.
Randolph-Macon answered with a nine-play, 82-yard drive capped by Luke Sellers' 26-yard scoring pass to Earl Peoples 1:59 before halftime. After the ensuing kickoff, Yellow Jackets' sophomore Brandon Harrison made the first of his two interceptions on the day and returned it 12 yards for a score just nine seconds later.
Sanders' four-yard run opened the second-half scoring. Teammate Sam Ahonen set up the score by recovering a muffed punt by Guilford's King on the Quakers' 11-yard line.
Harrison picked off Watkins for a second time on Guilford's next possession and the Yellow Jackets cashed in on a 36-yard field goal by Josh Storm that opened a 45-14 Randolph-Macon advantage.
Scruggs' 29-yard scamper around the right side finished his day and made it a 52-14 game early in the fourth quarter. Both teams substituted liberally in the final frame with rookie Dontae Thorne scoring Randolph-Macon's final touchdown of the game midway through the quarter. Guilford's Bailey Crego closing out the scoring with his first collegiate touchdown, a four-yard run.
The Yellow Jackets rolled up 554 total offensive yards, which helped them overcome 11 penalties worth 115 yards. Sellers, a sophomore making his second college start in place of injured senior Austin Faulkner, completed 10-of-20 passes for 145 yards and a touchdown. Peoples, the ODAC's leading receiver, finished with eight grabs for 124 yards and a score.
Guilford's Justin Parker made a season-high 10 catches for 106 yards and caught a two-point conversion pass. The Yellow Jackets limited King to 16 yards and a touchdown on two catches. He entered the game ranked among NCAA Division III's top-five leaders in receptions (9.3) and receiving yards (134.0) per game. Watkins completed 13-of-24 passes for 106 yards and a score. Crego led the rushers with a career- and team-high 41 yards on six carries. David LaPlaca's game-best 10 tackles paced the defense.
