Guilford Holds Off Methodist, 50-47

Fayetteville, N.C. (9/8/07) -- Quarterback Josh Vogelbach threw four touchdown passes and ran for the decisive score in visiting Guilford College's 50-47 nonconference football win at Methodist University Saturday at Monarch Stadium.

The host Monarchs (0-1) rallied from a 43-26 third-quarter deficit and pulled to within 43-40 on a 21-yard scoring pass from sophomore quarterback Brandon Parks to Brian Hopkins with 11:13 left in the game. The teams traded possessions before Vogelbach capped a six-play, 48-yard scoring drive with a four-yard keeper with 2:06 remaining. Hunter Chappell's point after gave the Quakers (2-0) a 50-40 lead.

Methodist refused to quit as senior Jonathan Mularski returned the ensuing kickoff 68 yards to the Quakers' 22-yard line. Three plays later, senior running back Mike Hill scored from four yards out for his school-record fourth score of the day. Rookie kicker Mario Miralles' point after made it a three-point game again with 1:12 remaining.

Guilford's Chad Kastor recovered Miralles' ensuing onside kick and Vogelbach completed a 13-yard pass to Kevin Vaughn, which enabled the Quakers to run out the clock.

Vogelbach completed 40-of-60 passes for 411 yards and four touchdowns, including three in the second quarter. The redshirt junior eclipsed the 400-passing yards mark for the second straight week and the seventh time in his 22-game college career. He moved into second place on the ODAC's career touchdown passes chart with 81.

Sophomore Hagen Miller enjoyed a career day with 14 catches for 128 yards and a score. Kastor made a personal-best 10 catches for 87 yards and caught a two-point conversion pass. Senior Joe Joyner added nine catches for 123 yards and three touchdowns, matching his career high. Guilford junior Zach Bobak ran 13 times for 52 yards and two first-half touchdowns, which equals his personal best for scores in a game.

Hill, who also set the school record with 33 carries, finished with 186 yards. Parks ran for a score and completed 11-of-18 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns. Hopkins made four receptions and Patrick Doleman had three grabs for 113 yards and a score. Senior linebacker Daryl Lawrence made a game-high 19 tackles (15 solo) and forced a first-quarter fumble, which set up the second-quarter touchdown that gave the Monarchs a 20-7 lead.

Methodist visits Chowan University next Saturday (9/15) while Guilford hosts Averett University (0-1) next week in its home opener. The first on-campus football game under the lights in Guilford's history begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Armfield Athletic Center.
