Guilford's Paylor Named ODAC Defensive Player of the Week

Greensboro, N.C. (9/11/06) -- Guilford College's Mario Paylor won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Defensive Player of the Week Award Monday. Paylor is Guilford's first ODAC Defensive Player of the Week since Mark Davis '05 in 2004.

Paylor's defensive effort in the Quakers' 27-11 win over Methodist helped limit the Monarchs to 13 first downs, 297 total offensive yards and one touchdown. The junior captain led Guilford's tacklers with 10 stops (3 solo) and forced a fumble inside of the Guilford 20-yard line to stop a potential scoring drive. Paylor also added a tackle for loss. After two games, he ranks second on the team with 14 total tackles, five solo and nine assisted.

Head coach Kevin Kiesel's Quakers are 2-0 for the first time since 1999. They have won six straight contests dating back to last season, the team's longest streak since 1997-98. Guilford travels to Averett to take on the Cougars Sept. 16 at 1:00 p.m. The Quakers' next home game is Sept. 30 at 1:00 p.m. against crosstown rival Greensboro in the 10th annual Gate City Soup Bowl. At halftime of the game, the field will be formally named for Jefferson-Pilot Professor of Sports Studies Emeritus and former Athletic Director Herb Appenzeller.
