Barnette Named Preseason All-America Team

Greensboro, NC (7/19/06) -- Guilford College senior Chris Barnette earned a spot on the 2006 Second Team Preseason All-America squad. Lindy's Magazine made the Quakers' wide receiver a first team selection to its Division III preseason All-America team in June.

Barnette enjoyed an impressive junior campaign in which he led all NCAA divisions with a league-record 101 receptions for 1,369 yards and 15 touchdowns in 10 games. He received second team All-America recognition from Don Hansen's Football Gazette and third team All-South laurels from The 6-0, 175-pound receiver earned First Team All-ODAC honors and had six games with at least 10 catches. Barnette tied the league and school standards with 17 receptions in a win over Catholic in which he added a school-record 233 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Barnette ranked second among last year's Division III leaders in receiving yards (136.9) and 50th in all-purpose yardage (133.9) per game. He scored a team-high 96 points and placed 29th among Division III scoring leaders (9.6 points per game).

A two-year starter, Barnette enters his senior season with 172 receptions for 2,053 yards and 21 touchdowns in 28 games. He needs 30 catches, 1,037 yards and 13 touchdowns to break Guilford's career receiving marks set by current Arena Football League wideout Junior Lord from 1994-97.

Barnette is one of 24 letter winners due back from coach Kevin Kiesel's 2005 squad that finished with a 5-5 record. The Quakers went 4-2 in the ODAC and shared second place in the 2005 conference standings. Guilford opens its 100th football season Sept. 2 against visiting Ferrum at 1:00 p.m. in the Armfield Athletic Center.
