Fayetteville, N.C.(9/9/06) -- Guilford's Josh Vogelbach threw for 403 yards and three touchdowns, including two in the final quarter, to lead visiting Guilford past Methodist Saturday at Monarch Field. The win spoiled the Monarchs' season opener and moved Guilford to 2-0 for the first time since 1999. The Quakers have won six straight dating back to last season, their longest streak since 1997-98.
Vogelbach completed 37 of 60 passes, 14 to senior receiver Chris Barnette, who finished with 131 receiving yards. Barnette's four-yard touchdown reception with 2:09 left in the game sealed the win for Guilford and capped an 11-play, 66-yard scoring drive. Vogelbach found Micah Rushing (8 rec., 111 yds., 1 TD) from 20 yards out earlier in the quarter to give the guests a 20-5 edge, but Methodist answered with Mike Hill's one-yard run to make it a nine-point game, 20-11.
The Quakers' defense turned in a solid effort, limiting Methodist to 13 first downs and 297 total offensive yards. Linebacker Mario Paylor made a team-best 10 stops. Guilford picked off three Methodist passes and recovered a fumble to finish with four forced turnovers. Danny Langston, Brandon Sparrow and Dan Presley each picked off a pass.
Guilford senior Travis Frazier booted two first-half field goals, including a career-long 42-yarder in the second quarter. The kick marked Guilford's longest since 1992.
Guilford visits Averett next Saturday.
