Guilford Drops Home Opener To Methodist 42-25

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Sophomore running back Mike Hill ran for 181 yards and two long touchdowns in visiting Methodist's 42-25 nonconference football win over Guilford Saturday. Monarchs' senior quarterback Chris Roncketti ran for 79 yards and two scores and passed for another in Methodist's (1-1) second straight win over the Quakers (0-2).

After Guilford's Travis Frazier spotted the hosts a 3-0 first-quarter lead with a career-long 41-yard field goal, Methodist scored touchdowns on three straight possessions on the way to a 20-10 halftime lead. Roncketti connected with junior receiver Chuck Howard on a 70-yard touchdown pass and then scored on a 40-yard keeper to give Methodist a 14-3 lead midway through the second quarter. Rookie Mitchell Collier collected a Demetrius Snead fumble on the first play of the ensuing possession and carried it 22 yards for his first college score. The touchdown was one of two scored following one of the Quakers' four turnovers in the game.

Freshman Antwin Shuford's first college interception on Guilford's first third-quarter possession led to Roncketti's second touchdown run, a five-yard keeper 5:08 into the third quarter. Hill scored on a 40-yard jaunt midway through the period for a 33-10 Monarchs' advantage. Methodist gained 102 of its 313 rushing yards in the third quarter on 13 carries.

Rookie Josh Vogelbach rallied the Quakers back into the game with touchdown passes on back-to-back possessions. He connected with junior Micah Rushing from four yards out late in the third period and hit Adam Hill from two yards out with around nine minutes left in the game to bring Guilford to within 36-25. The Monarchs contentedly kept the ball on the ground and Hill broke free for a 59-yard score with just under six minutes left to put the game out of reach.

In addition to his solid running, Roncketti also completed seven-of-12 passes for 122 yards and a score. Howard and Jonathan Mularski both made two receptions. Freshman Daryl Lawrence paced the defense with six tackles and a forced fumble. Shuford enjoyed a big game with five stops, including a sack, a fumble recovery and an interception.

Vogelbach completed 21-of-42 passes for 265 yards and three touchdowns for Guilford. Rushing led all receivers with six grabs for 46 yards and a score. Junior Chris Barnette had four catches for 81 yards and Hill finished with four receptions for 35 yards and his first Guilford touchdown. Rookie Kevin Vaughn caught three passes for 73 yards, including a 27-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Sophomore linebacker Mario Paylor matched his career high with 12 tackles. Classmate Scottie Byrd made a personal-best nine stops, including four behind the line, and blocked a field goal.

The Quakers continue their three-game home stand next Saturday (9/17) against Averett. Methodist hosts North Carolina Wesleyan Sept. 24 in its USA South Athletic Conference and home-opener.
