Guilford Falls to ODAC Frontrunner Bridgewater in Shootout, 62-46

BRIDGEWATER, VA  -- Tailback Marcus Washington scored four touchdowns and passed for another and tight end Corey Hulsebus caught three touchdown passes as Bridgewater outscored Guilford, 62-46, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference football action Saturday afternoon.

Washington scored on runs of six and 10 yards, caught touchdown passes of nine and 58 yards from Jacob Lewis, and threw a one-yard touchdown pass to Hulsebus to lead the Eagles' offense. Washington finished the game with 266 all-purpose yards. Hulsebus also had touchdown receptions of 19 and 10 yards from Lewis. Lewis finished the day 17-for-26 for 250 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.

The Eagles outburst was enough to overcome a record-setting performance by Guilford quarterback Josh Vogelbach, who passed for five touchdowns and ran for one. Vogelbach completed 37-of-58 passes for 380 yards. He threw just one interception. The Guilford signal-caller set school records for completions and attempts and tied the record for touchdown passes. The 380 passing yards is second all-time to his total of 395 on Oct. 1 against Greensboro.

Chris Barnette caught 12 passes for 151 yards and two scores to lead the Guilford receiving group and Micah Rushing added 11 catches for 97 yards and one score.

The Eagles jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter with Washington scoring twice and Hulsebus snagging a 19-yard touchdown toss from Lewis.

The Eagles stretched the lead to 27-0 when Winston Young scored on a 20-yard run with 13:12 left in the second period. Guilford got on the board when Vogelbach hit Joe Joyner with a 15-yard touchdown pass, but the Eagles answered with Washington's one-yard jump pass to Hulsebus, making the score 34-6. The Quakers scored in the final minute of the half when Vogelbach connected with Chris Barnette on a 21-yard pass, making the halftime score 34-12.

Bridgewater stretched the lead to 48-12 before the Quakers scored three times in less than two minutes to make the score 48-33. After Barnette scored on a 27-yard strike from Vogelbach, the Quakers defense got in the act when Josh Crowell scooped up a fumble and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown. The Guilford defense came up huge again when Scottie Byrd picked off a pass by Highfill and returned it to the BC 1. Vogelbach hit Zach Bobak for a 1-yard touchdown pass and Travis Frazier added the PAT, making the score 48-33 with 14:48 left in the game.

The Eagles responded on the next series when Lewis connected with Washington on a 58-yard scoring pass to give the Eagles some breathing room, 55-33.

The Eagles improve to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the ODAC while the Quakers drop to 1-5 and 0-2 in the ODAC.  Guilford returns home next week to tangle with ODAC rival Washington and Lee in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
