Greensboro, NC (07/17/03) -- Guilford senior Brian Person (Hope Mills, NC/Havelock) earned a spot on Don Hansen's Football Gazette 2003 NCAA Division III Preseason All-American Second Team Thursday. The lone Guilford player recognized, Person was one of four Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) players honored on the three teams selected by a panel of Division III sports information directors from around the country. He also earned Preseason All-America honors from Lindy's Magazine.
A 6-1, 285-pound nose guard, Person made the Football Gazette All-South Third Team in 2002. He enjoyed his finest season and represented Guilford on the first-team All-ODAC squad in 2002, which made him the Quakers' initial first-team all-league defensive lineman since 1999. Person started nine of the Quakers' 10 games and made a career-high 30 tackles (15 solo), which ranked 11th on the squad. He shared the team lead with 14 tackles for loss, including a personal-best three quarterback sacks. Person paced the ODAC with three forced fumbles and stood eighth in tackles for loss per game (1.56). His 0.33 forced fumbles per game ranked 24th among NCAA Division III players last season.
An honorable mention All-ODAC pick in 2001, Person enters his senior season with 71 tackles (29 solo), including seven for loss in 25 career contests. He has 4.5 career sacks and three forced fumbles.
Coach Mike Ketchum's Quakers posted a 3-7 overall record in 2002, 0-6 in the ODAC. Person and 47 other letter winners from last year's team return August 10 for preseason workouts. Guilford opens its 98th college football season September 6 at Division II power Carson-Newman.
