Greensboro, NC (11/15/03) -- Freshman quarterback Todd Woods (Radford, VA/Radford) threw three touchdown passes and junior running back Chris Miller (Stephens City, VA/Sherando) ran for a game-high 147 yards and a score in Emory & Henry's 35-20 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football win over host Guilford Saturday. The Wasps (5-5, 3-3 ODAC) end the year on a three-game winning streak, while the Quakers (2-8, 1-5 ODAC) lost their final three contests.
The Wasps forced a season-high six Guilford turnovers and converted four miscues into touchdowns. Senior Cameron McClelland (Port Orange, FL/Spruce Creek) returned his second-quarter interception 33 yards to the Quakers' 15-yard line, which set up Miller's six-yard touchdown run, his 14th rushing score of the year. Senior Jay Clark (Gretna, VA/Altavista) made his sixth pick of the season, which lead to Woods' 30-yard scoring pass to Rals Abraham (Tazewell, VA/Tazewell) just before halftime. Senior safety Brad Gerstmyer (York, PA/Central York) returned his third theft of the season 25 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter for a 21-0 Emory & Henry lead. A 13-yard scoring pass from Woods to senior tight end Adam Brightbill (Lebanon, VA/Lebanon) opened a 28-0 Emory & Henry edge with 9:32 left in the third quarter.
Guilford rookie Branden Lindsey (Reidsville, NC/Rockingham County) returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and put the Quakers on the board. They pulled to within 28-14 on their first fourth-quarter possession when Chris Gammon (Graham, NC/Graham) hit rookie tight end C.J. Graham (Cerro Gordo, NC/W. Columbus) with a touchdown pass from six yards out.
Turnovers marred the Quakers' fourth-quarter comeback efforts. Junior Adam Sparks (Galax, VA/Grayson County) jarred the ball loose from receiver Chris Barnette (Semora, NC/Person) at Emory & Henry's 12-yard line. The Wasps' Jared Beasley (Gate City, VA/Gate City) recovered the loose ball with 6:07 left. Emory & Henry's ensuing drive stalled, but the Wasps regained possession after Nathan Ogle (Sevierville, TN/Gatlinburg-Pittman) recovered a Micah Rushing (Albemarle, NC/Albemarle) fumbled punt return on Guilford's 30-yard line. Two plays later, Woods threw a 36-yard scoring pass to freshman Jerad Jackson (Big Stone Gap, VA/Powell Valley) for a 35-14 Emory & Henry lead with 5:26 remaining.
Guilford answered with a 10-play, 71-yard scoring drive capped by Gammon's 24-yard pass to senior fullback Brian Caye (Chapel Hill, NC/Northwood), but Emory & Henry recovered the ensuing on-side kick and effectively ended the Quakers' comeback bid.
Miller missed Emory & Henry's rushing attempts record by two carries as he had 40 totes for 147 yards. He set the Wasps' mark for rushes in a season (255) and became the eighth Emory & Henry player to gain 1,000 rushing yards in a season (1,103). Woods completed 13 of 26 passes for 188 yards, including five to Brightbill for 43 yards and one touchdown.
Gammon completed 11 of 21 passes for 152 yards and a career-best two touchdowns off the bench. Barnette led all receivers with seven grabs for 91 yards, both career highs. Junior linebacker Kyle Becher (Wallace, NC/East Duplin) made a career- and game-high 11 tackles. Sophomore Charlie Stroup (Lincolnton, NC/Lincolnton) also had a career-high with eight stops.
