Frazier's Field Goal Lifts Guilford Past Methodist, 27-24

Greensboro, NC (09/13/03) -- Freshman Travis Frazier's (Rougemont, NC/Person) 24-yard field goal with four seconds left in regulation gave host Guilford a 27-24 nonconference win over Methodist Saturday in the Quakers' home opener. Guilford's (1-1) third straight victory over the Monarchs (1-1) snapped its five-game losing skid dating back to last season.

After Methodist's Patrick Larkin's (Swansboro, NC/Swansboro) 32-yard field goal tied the game at 24-24 with 3:05 left, Guilford senior quarterback Josh Smith (Goldsboro, NC/Rosewood) directed an 11-play, 64-yard drive culminated by the winning kick. He completed three-of-four passes for 34 yards and also scrambled 17 yards to the Monarchs' 12-yard line on the winning drive.

Thanks to an effective running game and solid play by sophomore quarterback Chris Roncketti (Fayetteville, NC/Southview), the Monarchs rallied from three 10-point deficits, including two in the second half. Roncketti led all rushers with 161 yards on 14 carries and completed seven-of-17 passes for 58 yards and a touchdown. He scored on a 39-yard keeper in the third quarter to answer Guilford's Micah Rushing (Albemarle, NC/Albemarle) school-record 100-yard touchdown return of the second-half kickoff.

After Roncketti's score, Guilford responded with a 12-play, 67-yard drive capped by a four-yard touchdown run by Rushing. The rookie's second score of the game gave the Quakers a 24-14 lead with 6:40 left in the third quarter.

Methodist drove to Guilford's 21-yard line on its next possession before the drive stalled and Larkin missed a 38-yard field-goal attempt late in the quarter.

Feeding off the play of their offensive counterparts, Methodist's defense held Guilford to three plays and out and returned the ball to the offense at the end of the third quarter. Roncketti completed a 30-yard pass to Damarcus Wilson (Ft. Myers, FL/Riverdale) to Guilford's 16-yard line, setting up a 16-yard scoring run around the left side by sophomore running back Jeremy McSwain (Siler City, NC/Jordan-Matthews). The score capped a five-play, 57-yard drive and pulled the Monarchs to within 24-21 with 13:58 left.

Guilford's offense stalled on its next two possessions and Methodist tied the game on Larkin's 32-yard field goal on a fourth-down and one from the Quakers' 16-yard line. Roncketti scrambled for runs of 25 and 12 yards on two third downs on the 11-play, 64-yard drive.

Methodist rolled up 214 of its 330 rushing yards in the second half. Roncketti gained 104 of his rushing yards in the second half and Clarence Latimer (Sanford, FL/Seminole) added 92 rushing yards, including 68 in the final 30 minutes. The Monarchs outgained Guilford, 388-274, but were victimized by eight penalties for 83 yards and two turnovers. Guilford did not turn the ball over for the first time since November 15, 1997, a span of 51 games.

Guilford's Smith completed a career-high 15 passes in 22 attempts for 183 yards. Rookie Kyle Kiser (Winston-Salem, NC/North Forsyth) caught four passes for 62 yards and also scored on a one-yard run in the second quarter. Luke Bellman (New York, NY/Augusta Christian (GA)) also had four grabs, a career-high.

Guilford's O.J. Batts (Wallace, NC/Rose Hill) matched his career high with a game-best 11 tackles and made his 15th career interception. Kyle Becher (Wallace, NC/East Duplin) added 10 stops for the Quakers, while Brandon Harris (Greensboro, NC/Southern Guilford) led Methodist with 10 tackles.
