Guilford's Comeback Falls Short In ODAC Loss To Randolph-Macon

Greensboro, NC (11/01/03) -- Junior quarterback Mike Jenkins ran for a touchdown and passed for another in visiting Randolph-Macon's 14-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football win at Guilford Saturday. The Yellow Jackets (4-4, 3-1 ODAC) won their fourth consecutive game thanks in part to a strong defensive effort that limited the Quakers (2-6, 1-3 ODAC) to a fourth-quarter touchdown and only one trip inside Randolph-Macon's 20-yard line.

Jenkins capped a 15-play, 72-yard first-quarter drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge to give the guests a 7-0 lead. Jenkins sustained the five-minute, 40-second drive with third-down completions to Wes Buckner and Daryl Kimball, plus a two-yard first-down run. The drive proved costly as sophomore tailback Jimmy Stevens left the game for good with an injury. He had averaged 96 rushing yards in three games for injured starter E.J. Bush.

Randolph-Macon's Jonathan Farmer scooped up Guilford quarterback Josh Smith's errant pitch on the Quakers' first offensive play of the third quarter and returned it 22 yards to the Quakers' six-yard line. The fumble return set up Jenkins' six-yard touchdown pass to sophomore tight end Seth Rapoza on a play-action pass and a 14-0 Yellow Jackets' edge.

Guilford mounted multiple second-half drives, but failed to convert five third downs and three fourth downs in the final quarter. An 11-play drive to Randolph-Macon's 37-yard line ended on downs in the third quarter and a fourth-quarter trek to the Yellow Jackets' 15-yard line ended when Chris Headrick jarred a reception from Guilford's Chris Dunn and recovered it on the 13-yard line.

An injury to third-string running back Jason Taylor limited Randolph-Macon's ability to run out the clock and Guilford's defense pushed the Yellow Jackets back on their ensuing possession. Guilford's Micah Rushing returned Matt Taylor's punt to the Yellow Jackets' 35-yard line with 4:04 left and on the next play Gammon found Dunn down the middle for a 35-yard score and a 14-7 game with 3:57 left.

The Quakers' defense forced another Randolph-Macon punt, setting up one more offensive possession with 1:32 left with no timeouts. A 22-yard Gammon to Branden Lindsey completion put Guilford on their own 49-yard line, but the Yellow Jackets preserved their second straight win over Guilford by forcing four straight incompletions.

Senior defensive end Tiko Williams enjoyed a dominant game for Randolph-Macon and led the team with seven tackles, six solo. Leonard Abbott also made seven stops. Michael Bryant made his league-leading fifth interception of the year. Jenkins completed 13-of-26 passes for 179 yards. Kimball made four grabs for 29 yards and Buckner had three catches for 98 yards.

Gammon completed nine-of-28 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown for Guilford. Nick Harvey led Guilford with four receptions.

The Yellow Jackets visit Bridgewater next Saturday in a game to determine first place in the ODAC. The Quakers visit ODAC foe Catholic.
