Guilford Picked Sixth In ODAC Football Poll

Hampden-Sydney, VA (07/25/03) -- Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football coaches picked Guilford College sixth in their 2003 preseason football poll announced Friday at the league's annual media day. Two-time defending ODAC champion Bridgewater received four first-place votes and the top spot in the poll. Hampden-Sydney, last year's league runner-up, was picked second.

Guilford head coach Mike Ketchum starts his 13th season at his alma mater with 48 letter winners returning from last year's 3-7 club (0-6 ODAC). Senior nose guard Brian Person (Hope Mills, NC/Havelock) leads a veteran defensive unit that returns nine of 11 starters from the 2002 team. Person, Guilford's lone first-team All-ODAC pick a year ago, received second-team preseason All-America recognition from Don Hansen's Football Gazette this summer. Senior linebacker Wes Kidd (Southport, NC/South Brunswick) and senior defensive back O.J. Batts (Wallace, NC/Rose Hill), both second-team All-ODAC players, are other top returning defenders.

The Quakers open their 96th football season September 6 at Division II power Carson-Newman at 6:00 p.m. Guilford hosts Methodist September 13 at 1:00 p.m. in its home opener at the Armfield Athletic Center. The team's preseason workouts begin August 11.
