Jefferson City, TN (09/06/03) --J.J. Chatmon scored two touchdowns during a two-minute span of the first quarter to set the tone for Carson-Newman's 41-0 win over Guilford Saturday night.
Chatmon scored his first score on a 57-yard run with 11:11 left in the first quarter. Two minutes later, Chatmon scored from three yards out. Leonard Weaver caught a five-yard pass from Joey King with 1:45 left in the first quarter. Only 14 seconds later, the Eagles were again in the end zone as Donte Talford picked up a Quakers' fumble and ran it in 19 yards for the score.
The Eagles capped the first-half scoring with 44 seconds remaining in the second quarter when Donnie Davis scored a one-yard touchdown. Carson-Newman's scoring ended when Castinio Hayes rumbled into the end zone for a two-yard touchdown with 11:14 left in the fourth quarter.
The Eagles out-gained the Quakers, 341-171, in total yards and held Guilford to only 43 yards rushing on 41 attempts. The Eagles used nine players in the running game as they amassed 250 rushing yards. Carson-Newman was 4-6 in the red zone, while Guilford could not score in three trips inside the Eagles' 20-yard line.
