Greensboro, NC (09/16/02) -- Guilford junior running back Marcus Ballard (Burgaw, NC/Pender) earned the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's (ODAC) Offensive Football Player of the Week Award, the league office announced Sunday. The announcement marks the second Player of the Week prize of Ballard's career and Guilford's first award winner this season.
Ballard, a 5-8, 175-pound tailback, tied a Guilford record with four touchdowns and 24 points in the Quakers' 41-18 road win over Methodist September 14. He averaged nearly 10 yards per carry and ran 13 times for 126 yards and two scores. Ballard also caught two touchdown passes out of the backfield for 90 yards. His 216 all-purpose yards were the most by a Guilford player since Ballard's career-high 237 yards against Hampden-Sydney in 2000.
Guilford's leading rusher in each of the past two seasons, Ballard scored on runs of two and 17 yards Saturday, capping Guilford scoring drives on its first two possessions. He scored on a 64-yard catch-and-run in the second quarter and hauled in a 26-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. Ballard gained 106 of his 126 rushing yards in the first quarter.
Ballard leads the ODAC in scoring (12.0 points per game) and ranks fifth in the league in rushing (79.5 yards per game) after the first two weeks of the season.
Coach Mike Ketchum's Quakers (1-1) open their home and ODAC schedules this Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. versus Washington and Lee. The contest will be part of Guilford's Family, Homecoming and Reunion Weekend festivities.
