Guilford's Smith Wins Weekly Football Award

Greensboro, NC (10/07/02) -- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference selected Guilford quarterback Josh Smith (Goldsboro, NC/Rosewood) as its Offensive Football Player of the Week Sunday. Smith joins junior teammate Marcus Ballard (Burgaw, NC/Pender) as Guilford's two weekly football award winners this year.

A 5-9, 150-pound redshirt sophomore, Smith accounted for both Guilford offensive touchdowns in the Quakers' 21-7 win over Greensboro October 5. He completed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Ballard to conclude an effective two-minute drill with 35 seconds left in the first half. He also directed a 10-play, 80-yard scoring drive in the fourth quarter that ended with a four-yard touchdown run, his first of the year. Smith completed nine of 20 passes for 120 yards and ran 10 times for 21 yards.

A first-year starter, Smith has started all five games under center for the Quakers in 2002 and ranks fourth in the ODAC in passing efficiency (109.9). He has completed 47 of 106 passes for 798 yards and five touchdowns with seven interceptions. He also has 56 rushing yards on 48 carries and averages 170.8 total offensive yards per game. Smith threw for a career-high 236 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-30 league loss to Washington and Lee Sept. 21. He also completed two scoring passes in the Quakers' 41-18 win at Methodist Sept. 14.

Coach Mike Ketchum's Quakers (2-3) visit Ferrum this Saturday (10/12) at 1:00 p.m. in Guilford's final nonconference contest of the season. Guilford is 0-2 in the ODAC.
