Person Earns All-South Football Honor

Greensboro, NC (12/10/02) -- Guilford junior Brian Person (Hope Mills, NC/Havelock) earned third team recognition on the 2002 Football Gazette All-South Region Division III Football Team Wednesday. Players were nominated by sports information directors and coaches from throughout the NCAA Division III South Region, which includes 61 institutions and extends from Pennsylvania to Texas. A panel of sports information directors selected the regional teams.

A 6-1, 285-pound junior nose guard, Person enjoyed his finest season and was the lone Quaker to receive first team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) honors in 2002. He became Guilford's first first team all-league defensive lineman since Idris Coleman '00 in 1999. Person started nine of the Quakers' 10 games and made a career-high 30 tackles (15 solo), which ranked 11th on the squad. He shared the team lead with 14 tackles for loss, including a personal-best three quarterback sacks. Person paced the ODAC with three forced fumbles and stood eighth in tackles for loss per game (1.56). He enjoyed his best contest in Guilford's September 14 win over Methodist with five tackles, including four behind the line of scrimmage. Person also made four stops and a career-high two sacks in the Quakers' October 5 victory over crosstown rival Greensboro.

An honorable mention All-ODAC selection in 2001, Person enters his senior season with 71 tackles (29 solo), including seven for loss in 25 career games. He has 4.5 career sacks and three forced fumbles.

Coach Mike Ketchum's Quakers posted a 3-7 overall record in 2002, 0-6 in the ODAC. Person is one of 16 starters expected back in 2003.
