Corn Lifts Ferrum To Overtime Football Win At Guilford, 18-15

Greensboro, NC (10/06/01) -- Freshman kicker Bobby Corn's (Cumming, GA/Forsyth Central) 34-yard field goal in the first overtime lifted visiting Ferrum past Guilford, 18-15, in nonconference football action Saturday. Corn also kicked a 28-yard field goal with 44 seconds left in regulation to force the extra period and help the Panthers (4-2) to their fourth straight victory.

Senior linebacker Greg Middleton (Springfield, VA/Robert E. Lee) set up Corn's winning kick with by intercepting an Oren Robinson (Westside, SC/Anderson) pass in the Ferrum end zone on Guilford's first play of overtime. The play marked Robinson's third interception of the day and Ferrum's 20th theft in its last five meetings with Guilford.

Trailing 15-12, senior safety Eric West (Madison Heights, VA/Amherst County) made Ferrum's second interception of the game early in the fourth quarter and the Panthers marched to the Quakers' five-yard line. On third and goal, Guilford rookie defensive end Delvin Newkirk (Wallace, NC/Rose Hill) met Ferrum halfback E.J. Thomas (Salem, VA/Salem) in the backfield and took the ball out of his hands to stop Ferrum's drive with 4:41 left in the game.

The Panthers held Guilford on its ensuing possession and the Quakers' John Alt (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Nova) booted a 20-yard punt into the wind that returned the ball to Ferrum at Guilford's 31-yard line. Behind the running of Thomas and rookie fullback Vic Davidson (Winston-Salem, NC/North Forsyth), Ferrum moved to Guilford's 11-yard line with 48 seconds remaining. After a Panthers' time-out, Corn came on and lined the game-tying kick just over the crossbar.

The Quakers (1-5) took a 15-12 lead late in the third quarter on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Robinson to junior wideout Chris McKinney (Apex, NC/Apex). The play capped an 11-play, 63-yard scoring drive that consumed 5:16 of the third quarter. Guilford kept the drive alive with two of its three third-down conversions and a successful fourth-down run by Marcus Ballard (Pender, NC/Burgaw) at the Ferrum 33-yard line.

Guilford limited Ferrum, the nation's 10th-ranked rushing unit, to 208 yards on 60 carries, 66.8 yards below its season average. The Panthers' enjoyed nearly an 11-minute advantage in time of possession and converted eight-of-18 third-down opportunities. Conversely, the Quakers converted three-of-15 third-down plays.

Junior Kevin Embick (Jupiter, FL/Dwyer) went the distance at quarterback for Ferrum in place of regular starter Phil Hairston (Collinsville, VA/Fieldale-Collinsville). He completed seven of 13 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown, his first of the season, and gained 48 rushing yards. Freshman running back Derek Crawford (Faber, VA/Nelson County) caught three of Embick's passes for a game-high 81 yards, all on third-down plays. Junior linebacker Kelvin Fuller (Norfolk, VA/Fork Union) and sophomore defensive back Darren Venable (Covington, VA/Covington) led Ferrum's solid defensive effort with 12 tackles apiece.

Guilford's Ballard led all rushers with 12 carries for 76 yards. Sophomore linebacker Wes Kidd (Southport, NC/South Brunswick) paced the defense with a career-high 11 tackles and was one of three Quakers with 11 stops.

Guilford visits fifth-ranked Bridgewater next Saturday (10/13), while Ferrum hosts Methodist.
