Guilford Upends Randolph-Macon, 28-7, In ODAC Football Play

Greensboro, NC (10/27/01) -- Junior receiver Chris McKinney (Apex, NC/Apex) scored two touchdowns and Guilford's defense forced a season-high five turnovers in the Quakers' 28-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football win Saturday. The victory snapped Guilford's (2-6, 1-3 ODAC) five-game losing skid and marked Randolph-Macon's (4-4, 2-2 ODAC) third straight loss.

McKinney helped Guilford open a 14-0 halftime lead with a 65-yard first-quarter punt return for a touchdown, his school-record third of the season. McKinney, who entered the game ranked fifth among the national punt return leaders, needs one more punt return for a score to tie the NCAA Division III season record. He scored his first career rushing score with 4:44 left in the second quarter on a three-yard end around. The play capped a 10-play, 50-yard drive that was kept alive by a 15-yard Randolph-Macon roughing the kicker penalty.

Guilford knocked Yellow Jackets' junior quarterback Hunter Price (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) out of the game with 58 seconds left in the second quarter. Sophomore linebacker Travis Newkirk (Wallace, NC/Rose Hill) sacked Price and forced one of four Randolph-Macon turnovers. Price entered the contest ranked 18th among the national total offense leaders (279.1 ypg) and 10th among ODAC rushing leaders. He suffered a bruised right forearm, which prevented him from gripping the ball. With Price sidelined, the Yellow Jackets' offense managed just 55 total offensive yards and three first downs in the second half.

Guilford sophomore running back Brian Caye (Chapel Hill, NC/Norwood) scored his first career touchdown on a 46-yard scoring run on Guilford's first possession of the second half. Caye, a converted linebacker, finished with 79 yards on eight carries, all in the second half.

Trailing 20-0 midway through the fourth quarter, Randolph-Macon tried a fake punt, but sophomore punter Adam Tiller's (Hopewell, VA/Hopewell) run netted only one yard and gave the ball to Guilford on the Yellow Jackets' 44-yard line. Guilford took over and scored its final points on a 29-yard keeper by junior quarterback Oren Robinson (Anderson, SC/Westside) with 5:30 left.

As Guilford tried to run out the clock, Randolph-Macon freshman defensive back Chris Headrick (Prince George, VA/Prince George) returned a Rick Parks (Pittsboro, NC/Jordan-Matthews) fumble 72 yards for a touchdown on the game's final play. Headrick also made his first career interception and added nine tackles (6 solo) on the day. His score prevented Guilford's first shutout since a 1998 season-opening win over Methodist.

Sophomore Marcus Ballard (Burgaw, NC/Pender) led six Quakers' ballcarriers with a game-high 94 yards on 14 carries. Junior running back Brandon Lockhart (Roxboro, NC/Person) added 66 yards on 13 totes, while Robinson finished with 41 rushing yards. He also completed nine of 21 passes for 74 yards.

Newkirk paced Guilford's defense with nine tackles (6 solo), two behind the line of scrimmage. The Quakers' defense yielded eight first downs, matching its fewest allowed since 1999. Sophomore O.J. Batts (Wallace, NC/Rose Hill) made his team-leading fourth interception of the year in the Quakers' end zone, thwarting the Yellow Jackets' best offensive scoring chance.
