The Tigers (2-1, 1-0 ODAC) rolled up 523 total offensive yards in their highest scoring game since a 69-12 win over Methodist in 1990. Russell completed 20 of 24 passes, including seven to senior receiver Neal Herndon (Dry Fork, VA/Tunstall) for 128 yards and two scores. Tigers' freshman running back CW Clemmons (Covington, VA/Alleghany) posted his first 100-yard rushing contest with a game-high 134 yards on 15 carries. The Quakers had two fumbles and a blocked punt recovered by Hampden-Sydney inside their own 15-yard line, leading to 22 Tigers' points. Guilford (1-3, 0-2 ODAC) took a short-lived 7-3 lead after junior quarterback Oren Robinson (Anderson, SC/Westside) scored on a two-yard run on the Quakers' first possession. Sophomore running back Marcus Ballard (Burgaw, NC/Pender) set up the score with a 43-yard scamper to the Tigers' four-yard line. Hampden-Sydney answered with an 11-play, 72-yard drive, capped by Gould's first score, a one-yard plunge. After Guilford's next drive stalled on the Hampden-Sydney 27-yard line, Russell completed five passes, including a 45-yard strike to rookie Nick Ferrante (Bryantown, MD/Gonzaga), which set up Gould's second one-yard scoring run. Hampden-Sydney freshman Jeff Inman (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) blocked a Guilford punt late in the first quarter and recovered it on Guilford's five-yard line. Russell found senior tight end Matt Niemaseck (Chesterfield, VA/L.C. Byrd) two plays later from two yards out for the Tigers' first passing score of the year and a 17-7 Hampden-Sydney lead. Guilford's best chance to stop the Tigers' momentum came midway through the second quarter when sophomore Wes Kidd (Southport, NC/South Brunswick) recovered a muffed Tigers' punt return on Hampden-Sydney's 13-yard line. However, junior linebacker Dick Scott (Dry Fork, VA/Tunstall) forced and recovered a fumble by Guilford backup quarterback Josh Smith (Goldsboro, NC/Rosewood) three plays later. Russell's 24-yard touchdown pass to Herndon with 1:59 left in the first half capped a nine-play, 80-yard drive and gave the guests a 31-7 lead. A Calvin Lockhart (Roxboro, NC/Person) fumble on the Quakers' 15-yard line set up a five-yard touchdown run by Russell that gave the Tigers' a 38-7 halftime edge. Hampden-Sydney scored twice in the opening five minutes of the third quarter in just three plays on a 36-yard Russell to Herndon touchdown pass and on a Gould three-yard run. Sophomore Alex Myers (Washington, DC/DeMatha) set up Gould's third touchdown by recovering a Ballard fumble on the Quakers' three-yard line. Guilford junior safety J.J. Edwards (Mims, AL/Astronaut) led all tacklers with a career-high 16 stops.
