Hampden-Sydney, VA (07/28/00) -- Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) head football coaches picked Guilford College sixth in their preseason poll Friday prior to the league's Media Day. Defending league champion Catholic received five first-place votes and the top spot in the seven-team poll, followed by Randolph-Macon and Bridgewater .
Guilford head coach Mike Ketchum begins his 10th season with 31 letter winners back from last season's 4-6 team. The Quakers placed sixth in the ODAC with a 2-4 league record. Ketchum expects nearly 60 freshmen to join the returning players for the first day of practice August 16. Guilford's opens the regular season September 2 at Division I-AA Charleston Southern and begins league play two weeks later against Washington and Lee in the Quakers' home opener.
With only four seniors on the roster, Guilford anticipates a very young team in 2000. The Quakers' offense returns sophomore quarterback David Hessler (Rockville, MD/Walter Johnson), who enjoyed the best freshman passing season in school history, and junior tight end Nick Lamotta (Rolesville, NC/Wake-Forest-Rolesville), an honorable mention All-ODAC pick in 1999. Another 1999 honorable mention all-league pick, junior defensive lineman Luke White (Greensboro, NC/Southern Guilford), heads a defensive unit that includes last year's top tackler, junior linebacker Will Black (Charlotte, NC/Providence Day). Sophomore punter John Alt (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Nova) earned second team All-South and second team All-ODAC laurels in 1999.
