Greensboro, NC (08/26/00) -- Freshman quarterback Kyle Martin (Florence, SC/South Florence) threw two touchdown passes to junior tight end Nick Lamotta (Rolesville, NC/Wake Forest-Rolesville) as the White team rallied for a 14-6 win over the Red in Guilford College's preseason intrasquad scrimmage Saturday morning.
The Red team jumped on top on its first possession when rookie running back Josh Moore (Sharon, SC/York) scored from one-yard out to cap a 10-play, 58-yard scoring drive. Senior running back Marques Williams (Riviera Beach, FL/Suncoast) picked up 26 yards in the drive before leaving the game with an injured ankle. Moore stepped in and picked up 15 of his game-high 62 rushing yards on four carries.
The White got on the board in the second quarter when Martin hooked up with Lamotta over the middle on a 58-yard touchdown pass with 5:05 left before halftime. Freshman kicker Holt Alcon (Gibsonville, NC/Eastern Guilford) added the extra point to give the White team a 7-6 halftime advantage.
Both team's defenses took over in the middle quarters, as the teams combined for just two first downs in the third quarter. Junior defensive lineman Sean Glarner (Coral Springs, FL/Coral Springs) stood out for the Red defense with four tackles, including three for loss and two sacks. Classmate Luke White (Greensboro, NC/Southern Guilford) paced the White defenders with a team-high seven stops, including a half a sack. Rookie linebackers Matthew Ledbetter (Elon College, NC/Western Alamance) (6 tackles, 5 solo) and Nick Joyce (Raleigh, NC/Millbrook) (5 tackles) also played well for the White team.
The White squad added its final score late in the fourth quarter when Martin scrambled out of the pocket and found Lamotta cutting across the end zone from 26 yards out with 12 seconds left in the game. Martin kept the drive alive with a 23-yard, play-action pass to rookie fullback Ben Massey (St. Cloud, FL/St. Cloud) on fourth-and-two from the Red 40-yard line.
Lamotta led all receivers with four catches for 115 yards. Junior tight end Chuck Irwin (Mulberry, FL/Mulberry) made all three Red receptions for 31 yards. Sophomore quarterback David Hessler (Rockville, MD/Walter Johnson), the Quakers' incumbent starter, played effectively in his three series for the White team, completing four of seven passes for 44 yards.
Coach Mike Ketchum's club opens Guilford's 97th football season next Saturday (9/2) at Division I-AA Charleston Southern at 1:30 p.m. The Quakers, picked sixth in the preseason Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) coaches' poll, return 29 letter winners and 10 starters from last year's 4-6 team.
