Guilford's Alt Captures Regional Football Honors

Greensboro, NC (12/22/00) -- Guilford College sophomore punter John Alt (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Nova) earned third-team 2000 Football Gazette Division III All-South Region football honors Friday.

A second team all-region performer a year ago, Alt finished second in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) and 20th in NCAA Division III this year with a 39.1 yards per punt average. He earned second team all-conference laurels for the second straight season this fall after kicking a league-high 61 times for 2,388 yards. He placed 14 kicks inside the opponents' 20-yard line with no touchbacks. Alt booted a career-long 66-yard punt in Guilford's season-opener at Division I-AA Charleston Southern and averaged over 40 yards per kick in four contests. A Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-District III honoree, he had eight punts of 50 yards or more. Alt owns a 39.2-yard career punting average in two seasons.

Coach Mike Ketchum's Quakers finished the season with a 1-9 record, 1-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). Guilford's 75-man roster featured 61 players in their first or second college football season, including 45 freshmen. The Quakers return 65 letter winners for the 2001 campaign.
