Guilford Picked Third in ODAC Preseason Football Poll

Greensboro, NC (8/14/98) -- The six head football coaches of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) recently selected Guilford College third in their annual preseason football poll. The coaches tabbed Emory & Henry College first, followed by Randolph-Macon College and Guilford. Washington and Lee, Hampden-Sydney and Bridgewater round out the poll.

Guilford, Emory & Henry and Randolph-Macon shared the 1997 ODAC gridiron title with matching 4-1 league records. Emory & Henry returns 71 letter winners from last season's 8-2 club which captured a share of its fourth straight conference title and ninth in 13 years. The Wasps feature 14 returning All-ODAC selections, including junior Oliver Jordan, the league's rushing leader a year ago. Randolph-Macon graduated much of its offensive attack, but does have seven 1997 all-conference picks back in the fold.

Coach Mike Ketchum starts his ninth season as Guilford's head coach with 35 letter winners back from last year's record-setting 8-2 squad. The Quakers graduated career receiving leader Junior Lord (now with the Washington Redskins) and career passing leader Danny Strelkauskas, but return two-time All-ODAC running back David Heggie (Apex, NC/Apex) plus three other all-conference performers. Heggie needs 757 yards to become the Quakers' career rushing leader. Guilford begins preseason workouts Tuesday, August 18 in preparation for its September 12 season opener at Methodist.
