VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Jacob Pilarski pitched a complete game and allowed no earned runs as Virginia Wesleyan defeated Guilford College, 9-1, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament game Friday afternoon. The Quakers and Marlins play game two of the best-of-three series Friday at 3 p.m.
In a battle of unbeaten hurlers, Pilarski (10-0) scattered eight hits and struck out six Quakers in the victory. The Marlins handed Guilford starter Zach Dinkins his first defeat of the season. Dinkins dropped to 5-1 and was chased after 3 1/3 innings. He allowed seven earned runs, five hits, four walks and struck out one hitter. Brody Holloman and Parker Brann also pitched for Guilford.
Virginia Wesleyan tallied two runs in the first inning and five in the fourth to chase Dinkins. Zach Clark had two hits for the hosts and Brady Fallon smacked a solo home run for the home club.
The Quakers' lone run came in the sixth inning. Brett Shapcott led off the frame by reaching base on a Marlins' error. Mitchell Stumpo then singled to move Shapcott to third base. A Trevor Denton ground-out brought home Shapcott for the unearned run.
Virginia Wesleyan had nine hits to Guilford's eight. Stumpo went 2-3 for the visitors. Ryan Hill had a double, which was Guilford's only extra-base hit.
