Baseball Rally Falls Short Versus #26 Methodist

GREENSBORO, N.C. (4/6/10) -- Trey Such went 3-5 with three RBI and his team-leading eighth homer in nationally-ranked Methodist University's 8-7 baseball win at Guilford College Tuesday.

The Monarchs (21-8), ranked 26th in this week's American Baseball Coaches' Association Division III Poll, have won eight of their last nine games.

Methodist took advantage of some sharp pitching by starter Tre Britt (4-2) and some shoddy Guilford defense to open a 6-0 lead after five innings. Britt fanned six and scattered six hits before leaving in the sixth after the Quakers (13-17) strung together four straight singles and cut their deficit to 6-3.

The Monarchs answered with two in the top of the seventh on Such's two-run blast that chased Guilford starter Zach Daw (1-3).

Methodist took an 8-3 lead into the seventh, but Guilford scored twice in the frame and Kyle Wooden led off the eighth with his team-leading seventh homer to make it an 8-6 contest. Monarchs' closer Rusty White entered with two out in the eighth and earned his fifth save despite yielding a ninth-inning run on three straight two-out singles.

In addition to Such's three hits, Brian Goodwin had two hits and an RBI. Shawn Lovette scored three times and hit his third homer of the year, a solo shot in the third inning.

Wooden went 2-5 with three RBI for the Quakers. Teammate Jordan Nelson also homered and finished with two hits. Casey Mann was 2-5 with two runs and an RBI.

Guilford hosts Emory University Friday (4/9) at 3:00 p.m. on McBane Field.
