Baseball Team Falls Twice at Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (4/3/10) -- Gage Collins' two-out triple in the bottom of the eighth inning gave Virginia Wesleyan College a 4-3 baseball win over visiting Guilford College Saturday and a sweep of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader.

The Marlins (17-11, 9-5 ODAC) took a 5-1 opening-game triumph behind Davis Hall's complete-game four-hitter. Virginia Wesleyan took advantage of two Guilford errors to score three runs in the second inning and two more in the sixth. The Marlins' Ryan Estrella was 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Teammate Myles Shipp also had two hits and an RBI.

Alex Starbuck was 2-3 with two doubles for Guilford (13-16, 5-8 ODAC). Will Simpson (3-3) walked four in 5.2 innings on the mound. He took the loss despite yielding one earned run.

Guilford's Adam Hart fanned a career-high 11 batters in 7.2 innings of the nightcap, but could not contain Collins, who was 2-3 with three RBI. In addition to his game-winning hit, he had an RBI single in the first and a sacrifice fly in the third inning. Shipp and Mike Marion also had two hits for Virginia Wesleyan. Colin McNulty (3-2) earned the win after pitching into the seventh inning. Alex DeJesus threw a scoreless ninth inning for his team-leading fourth save.

Jay Cox and Kyle Wooden both had two hits for the Quakers. Will Cornelius' two-out, pinch-hit single tied the game at 3-3 in the seventh inning.

Guilford hosts Methodist Tuesday (4/6) in a nonleague game rescheduled from Feb. 24.
