GREENSBORO, N.C. (2/18/10) -- Guilford College's Alex Starbuck had three hits and scored four times in the Quakers' 11-6 home win over visiting Greensboro College Thursday. Teammate Drew Ward added two hits and three runs batted in (RBI) in the Quakers' home opener.
Starbuck had a first-inning RBI double and scored on a Ward single as Guilford (3-1) struck for three runs in the first off of Greensboro starter Jacob Cadle (0-1). Kyle Wooden's run-scoring triple in the third made it a 4-0 game before the Pride (2-2) got on the board in the fifth inning when Matt Irwin scored on a wild pitch after leading off with a triple.
The Quakers answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, including two from a Ward single.
The Pride tacked on single runs in the sixth and seventh innings off of Guilford starter Will Simpson (1-0), which made it a 7-3 contest. The Quakers took advantage of five walks and two wild pitches in a four-run seventh inning that put the game out of reach.
Greensboro's reserves rallied with three runs in the top of the ninth off of Guilford closer Michael Blocher. Logan Beasley's two-run single highlighted the Greensboro ninth.
In addition to Starbuck and Ward, Wooden and Jordan Nelson both had two hits for Guilford. Simpson picked up his first college win in his first college start. He allowed three runs and struck out four in six innings.
Irwin and Murray Smith both had two hits and scored a run for Greensboro, which stranded 13 runners.
Guilford hosts Neumann (Pa.) College Saturday (2/20) in a noon doubleheader and Case Western Reserve Sunday (2/21) in a noon doubleheader. All four games are on the Quakers' McBane Field.
