Guilford Lands Five ODAC Player of the Week Awards

GREENSBORO, N.C. (2/23/10) -- Guilford College collected five of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's (ODAC) of the Week Awards Tuesday. Sophomore Jessica Burcham of the softball team won the ODAC's Softball Pitcher of the Week and was also named Guilford's Student-Athlete of the Week, as presented by the school's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

The Quakers swept both baseball prizes as junior Kyle Wooden earned the hitter of the week honor and senior Adam Hart was named pitcher of the week. A 6-5, 240-pound first baseman, Wooden hit .379 with four homers and 10 RBIs as Guilford opened with a 5-3 record. He has homered in each of the last four games, a streak last matched by Guilford's Alan York '98 in 1998. Hart has won each of his first three starts and has a 1.38 earned run average (ERA). He has 11 strikeouts in 13 innings and has allowed only two earned runs. The baseball team hosts Methodist University Wednesday (2/24) at 2:30, weather permitting.

Guilford also won both softball awards as sophomore Kimberly Keys took the hitter of the week honor and Burcham was named pitcher of the week. Keys hit safely in five of Guilford's first six games and helped the Quakers to their best start in school history (5-0-1). She leads the team with a .412 batting average and also has a double, triple, home run and four RBI. Burcham has been dominant in the circle with a 4-0 record and 1.55 ERA in five appearances. She has 31 strikeouts in 29 innings and has held opponents to a .189 batting average. The softball team visits Averett University Sunday (2/28) at 1:00 p.m.

Junior Liz Killion captured the ODAC's Women's Tennis Player of the Week honor. She has won three of her four matches through Guilford's (1-1) first two contests. Killion won her fourth singles match and teamed with Mary Simpson for a second-doubles win in the Quakers' 7-2 season-opening triumph over Greensboro College. Killion and Simpson accounted for Guilford's lone points in its ODAC loss to Hollins University Feb. 21. Guilford visits preseason league favorite Washington and Lee University Sunday (2/28) at 2:00 p.m.

The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford's SAAC, which is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 20 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among the school's student-athletes and non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive and the promotion of Champs Life Skills, which promotes intercollegiate athletics as a key part of the campus educational program and the student-athlete as an integral part of the student body. Its aim is to increase student-athletes' community involvement and to engage the greater Guilford community with the athletic department.
