  • Guilford's Alex Starbuck Wins Academic Honor

    Guilford College's Alex Starbuck earned Second Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III baseball honors Thursday from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). CoSIDA members nominated and selected the academic all-district teams.
  • Guilford's Wooden Named to First Team All-ODAC Squad

    Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) head baseball coaches selected Guilford College sophomore Kyle Wooden to the 2009 First Team All-ODAC squad, league officials announced Wednesday. Wooden's teammate, junior Drew Ward, earned honorable mention all-league recognition. The selections were based on performance in league games only.

    Guilford College honored its top student-athletes Sunday night at a year-end ceremony in the Ragan-Brown Field House. Six award winners nominated and selected by the school's athletic department were recognized at the ceremony. Former Guilford basketball standout Adonis "Sporty" Jeralds '81 addressed the group. A booking coordinator at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, Jeralds played basketball at Guilford and is a motivational speaker and author.

    Sammy Stuart tossed his first college complete game and Jason Flud had three hits, including a homer, in Guilford College's 8-2 win over visiting Bluefield State College Tuesday.
  • Guilford Splits With Washington and Lee

    Terrence McKelvey's two-run, two-out homer in the sixth inning rallied Washington and Lee University past Guilford College in the opening game of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader Sunday. The Generals' 10-7 comeback win in the opener clinched the sixth and final position in the upcoming ODAC Tournament and eliminated the Quakers from contention. Guilford won the nightcap, 13-9.

    Randolph-Macon hit a combined seven home runs en route to a doubleheader sweep of ODAC rival Guilford on Saturday afternoon in Ashland. Randolph-Macon won game one, 10-7, and the nightcap, 18-10.

    Bryan Breedlove threw eight strong innings in visiting Lynchburg College's 10-3 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball win at Guilford College Wednesday afternoon. Breedlove's (3-2) second gem versus Guilford in less than a week gave the Hornets (24-11, 13-3 ODAC) a sweep of the season series with the Quakers (17-16-1. 6-8 ODAC). Breedlove threw over seven solid innings to get the win in Lynchburg's 6-2 win over Guilford last Thursday.

    Drew Gurkin's leadoff homer in the top of the 11th inning broke an 8-8 tie and lifted visiting Guilford College to a 9-8 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win at Roanoke College Tuesday night. Michael Blocher (4-0) picked up the win with 3.2 scoreless innings of relief as the Quakers (17-12-1, 6-4 ODAC) swept the season series from Roanoke (8-16, 3-9 ODAC).

    Eastern Mennonite University swept an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader from visiting Guilford College Saturday, winning 8-2 and 13-4. The wins put the Royals (9-15-1, 4-7 ODAC) back in the hunt for an ODAC Tournament berth, while bringing the Quakers (16-11-1, 5-4 ODAC) back to the pack in the race for the ODAC's top spot.

    Sophomore Kyle Wooden won his second Old Dominion Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter of the Week Award and junior teammate Michael Blocher earned the league's Pitcher of the Week honor Monday. Wooden also received the Guilford College Student-Athlete of the Week Award for the second time this season. The prize is presented by weekly Guilford’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

The host Wasps (5-11, 3-3 ODAC) claimed the opener, 8-6, which ended Guilford's (15-7-1, 4-2 ODAC) four-game winning streak.

Sammy Stuart earned his first win of the season as the Quakers (11-6-1) gained a split of the doubleheader after Maryville's 6-3 opening-game win.

    Three Guilford College students received player of the week plaudits from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Monday. Junior Rhett Bonner of the men's basketball team collected his second weekly award of the month and Guilford's fifth prize in six weeks. Sophomore Kyle Wooden of the baseball team and rookie Julie Langseth of the softball squad collected their first awards in the league's first week of spring-sport honors.

    Guilford College's baseball team split a nonconference double-header with visiting Case Western Reserve Sunday afternoon at a wind-blown McBane Field. The Quakers (8-3) had 15 hits and took advantage of 11 Spartans' walks to claim a 23-8 win in the opener. Case Western (1-3) came back for a 14-9 win in the nightcap for its lone win in the four-game series. Guilford's 8-3 start matches the program's best since 2006.
  • Ward Homers Three Times in Sweep of Case Western

    Guilford College's Drew Ward homered in both games of the Quakers' double-header sweep of visiting Case Western Reserve Saturday at McBane Field. The junior third baseman hit a solo shot in the fifth inning of the Quakers' 5-4 win in the opener. Ward followed with a career-high two homers in the nightcap, a 17-7 Guilford win.

    Guilford College split a nonconference double-header with visiting Southern Virginia University Thursday afternoon on the Quakers' McBane Field. Left-hander Michael Edstrom tossed a complete-game five-hitter with six strikeouts in the Knights' (2-5) 6-2 opening-game win. Josh Sumler's RBI grounder broke a 6-6 tie in the nightcap and Trey Daniel threw two scoreless innings for his first save as the Quakers (5-2) won the nightcap, 8-6.

  • Gurkin's Blast Powers Guilford Past Piedmont, 19-18

    Drew Gurkin belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to give Guilford College a wild, 19-18 opening-day win over visiting Piedmont College Saturday. Gurkin also added a two-run single in the Quakers' (1-0) six-run sixth inning.
  • Guilford Tabbed Eighth in ODAC Baseball Poll

    Guilford's baseball squad was picked eighth by Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball coaches in the league's preseason poll Thursday. Defending league champion Randolph-Macon College tops the poll with six of 10 first-place votes. Virginia Wesleyan College, the defending conference runner-up, finished second in the balloting and received one first-place vote.

    Guilford looks to improve upon its 17-22 overall record in 2008, (6-12 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC)). The Quakers went through 2008 with a young pitching staff and missed going to the six-team ODAC Baseball Tournament for just the fourth time in eight years. Head coach Nick Black ‘02 embarks on his fourth season and returns 24 letter winners from last year.
