Roanoke Tops Guilford, 4-0, in Baseball

SALEM, Va. (4/13/07) -- The Roanoke College baseball team improved to 7-7 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with a 4-0 win over visiting Guilford College Friday evening. With the win the Maroons improve to 8-21 overall and remain in sixth place in the ODAC standings. The top-six teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the conference 's postseason tournament. Roanoke hosts Bridgewater on Saturday in a double-header. Prior to Friday's action, Bridgewater was in fifth place in the league standings.

Guilford falls to 10-21 overall, 3-9 in the ODAC.

The Maroons got an eight-inning, four-hit pitching performance from senior left-hander Chase Davidson who got his team-best third win of the year. Davidson (3-3) struck out three batters in the win and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh. He gave way to Jonathan Wills for the final inning. Wills allowed just one hit in the ninth.

The Maroons got the only run they needed in the bottom of the fourth. Brennan Thacker led off the inning getting hit by a pitch and three batters later scpred from second base on senior Clint Zimmerman 's single. Roanoke scored again an inning later, thanks to a Guilford throwing error.

The bottom of the sixth saw the Maroons tack on their third run when Cody Kidd singled to score Alan Moore from second base. The fourth and final Roanoke run crossed the plate in the eighth. With one out, Moore tripled and then scored his second run of the game when senior Nate Unroe singled.

Phil Drew was 2-4 with his team-leading 14th double of the season. Paul Keenan (3-3) suffered the loss, despite yielding two earned runs on five hits in seven innings.

The Quakers visit Eastern Mennonite Saturday in an ODAC doubleheader.
