Baseball Downs Roanoke, 17-8

Greensboro, N.C. (4/3/07) -- After a forgettable 3-16 record in March, Guilford College's baseball team started April on a good note with a 17-8 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over visiting Roanoke College Tuesday afternoon at McBane Field. The Quakers' third ODAC win in four games raised their overall record to 9-20 (3-9 ODAC). Roanoke slipped to 6-18 (5-6 ODAC) with its third straight loss.

Senior Chad Boone continued his torrid hitting for the Quakers with three hits, including a fifth-inning grand slam, which keyed an eight-run Guilford fifth. Junior Zach Schlesinger opened the inning with his second home run in three games. The Quakers banged out seven of their 17 hits in the fifth frame and opened an insurmountable 14-1 lead.

The Maroons answered with four two-out runs in the top of the sixth inning, which were aided by a pair of Guilford errors. Alan Moore delivered an RBI single in the frame and slammed a three-run homer to left-center field in the seventh inning that pulled the Maroons back to within 14-8. Junior Andrew McClannon replaced rookie starter Reid MacLean (4-1) and got the final two outs of the inning.

Sophomore Byron Myers' two-run double in the seventh and senior Brian Burton's RBI-single provided the game's final margin. McClannon and Boone, who pitched the ninth, scattered two hits in the final 2.2 innings.

Guilford sophomore Joe John, the ODAC's leader in runs, hits and home runs, went 3-for-6 with four RBI and two doubles. Myers also finished with two hits, including two doubles, and drove in a career-high four runners. Schlesinger finished 2-for-6 with three RBI.

Moore paced the Maroons with three hits and four RBI. The ODAC's fourth-leading hitter entered the game with a .405 average and added a double in the ninth inning, his team-leading 12th of the year. Chris Zachodzki hit his club-best fourth homer in the Roanoke third. He and Nathan Unroe had two hits apiece. Starter Jimmy Winterer (1-4), the first of four Roanoke hurlers, absorbed the loss after yielding three runs in his only inning of work.
