Guilford College Trio Honored With Weekly Awards

Greensboro, N.C. (3/26/07) -- Guilford College's Chad Boone and Nika Botkin earned the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Player of the Week Awards for baseball and tennis, respectively, Monday. Mary Hutchins captured the Guilford College Student-Athlete of the Week Award, presented by the school's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Boone, a senior outfielder and pitcher, hit .571 and scored nine runs in the Quakers' 2-2 week. He went 2-4 with three runs scored and a stolen base in Guilford's 13-9 loss to Tufts March 19. Boone's bat and arm helped Guilford end a 12-game losing skid three days later when he went 1-3 and scored a run in the Quakers' 17-7 triumph over Lawrence. He also threw a scoreless inning of relief. Boone singled, scored twice and stole a base in a 7-2 loss at Emory & Henry March 24 in the first game of an ODAC double-header. He matched his career high with six RBI and four hits in the nightcap, an 18-11 Guilford win.

The week raised Boone's batting average to .319 in 19 games and gave him team lead with 22 RBI. He also has four doubles and five stolen bases. On the mound, Boone is 0-2 with a 6.50 earned run average (ERA) in six appearances. He has 11 strikeouts and seven walks in 18 innings. Coach Nick Black's '02 Quakers carry a 7-16 record (1-8 ODAC) into Tuesday's (3/27) 7:00 p.m. game at Methodist. Guilford plays cross-town rival Greensboro College in First Horizon Park Wednesday (3/28) night at 6:00 p.m.

Botkin, a sophomore, helped the Quakers to a 2-1 week against league rivals. She won two of three matches at first singles, all in straight sets, and teamed with Krystal Parrish (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) for a 1-2 mark at first doubles. Botkin won both singles and doubles matches in Guilford's 9-0 win over Lynchburg March 21. While she lost twice three days later at Emory & Henry, Guilford posted a 5-4 victory that marked the Quakers' first over the Wasps since 1997-98. Botkin's straight-set win at Roanoke March 25 scored the Quakers' lone point in an 8-1 ODAC loss.

Botkin has a 5-5 record at first singles and ranks third on the team in singles wins. She and Parrish are 5-5 at first doubles, the Quakers' best doubles mark. Botkin has helped coach Jenn Anderson's '96 club to a 7-3 record (4-3 ODAC) entering Saturday's (3/31) league match at Sweet Briar.

Hutchins led the Quakers in a 2-0 week with 16 points on 10 goals and six assists. She also won six draw controls and caused two turnovers. The 5-8 attacker set the Guilford scoring record with 11 points on a career-high seven goals and four assists in the Quakers' March 24 win over Wooster. She had three goals and two assists in a March 26 win over Bridgewater and helped Guilford erase a 5-4 half-time deficit.

Hutchins leads the Quakers with 25 goals, 13 assists and 38 points. She stands fourth among ODAC leaders in goals and points per game, through contests of March 22. Hutchins became Guilford's career leader in assists earlier this season and has moved into fifth place on the school's career scoring chart with 141 (90 goals, 51 assists) points in 38 matches. Her 90 career goals stand sixth in school history. Coach Matthew Grosso's Quakers enter Wednesday's (3/28) game at Methodist with a 3-5 record (1-2 ODAC).

Guilford's SAAC is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among student-athletes and non-student-athletes on the campus. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive to benefit local charities and dodgeball competitions among representatives from Guilford's administration and athletic teams.
