Joe John Named ODAC Baseball Player of the Week

Greensboro, N.C. (02/28/07) -- Guilford College's Joe John received Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Player of the Week Awards Tuesday. The announcement marks the first spring awards of the season and the first such honors for John. He also received Guilford's Student-Athlete of the Week Award, presented by the school's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

John, a sophomore outfielder, has hit safely in each of the Quakers' first eight games. His .448 batting average stands second on the team. He leads Guilford with five stolen bases (in five attempts), 11 walks, two homers and a .619 on-base percentage. The Quakers' leadoff hitter ranks second on the squad with nine runs, 13 hits, and four doubles. He matched his career high with three hits in home setbacks to Averett (Feb. 20) and Rutgers-Newark (Feb. 23). John belted two solo homers in Guilford's loss to Averett, matching another personal best.

Coach Nick Black's Quakers (5-3) conclude an eight-game home stand Wednesday (2/28) against Greensboro College at 2:30 p.m. The Quakers have won five of their last seven games and open ODAC play Saturday (3/3) at Lynchburg at 1:00 p.m.

Guilford's SAAC is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among student-athletes and non-student-athletes on the campus. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive to benefit local charities and dodgeball competitions among representatives from Guilford's administration and athletic teams.
