Greensboro, N.C. (2/28/07) -- Jess Maloney's two-out single two center scored the go-ahead runs in Greensboro College's 12-9 baseball win over Guilford College Wednesday at McBane Field. The hit keyed the Pride's (9-7) three-run sixth inning and turned an 8-7 deficit into a 9-8 advantage. Josh Maras, Kevin Showe and Torrey Poholsky combined to hold Guilford to a single run in the final four innings for the victory.
Maloney helped Greensboro open a 6-2 lead after three-and-a-half innings with an RBI double in the first inning and an RBI triple in the third frame. He finished the day with four hits and five runs batted in.
Guilford's Zach Schlesinger had a successful squeeze bunt to score John Goodwin from third in Guilford's three-run fourth inning. He delievered a two-out, three-run triple in the fifth inning that gave Guilford a short-lived 8-6 lead.
The teams traded runs in the eighth inning and Greensboro added two key insurance tallies in the ninth on a James Hone sacrifice fly and a Tyler Wolfe squeeze bunt. Schlesinger and Ian Spector delivered two-out singles for Guilford in the ninth, but Poholsky retired Joe John on a fly ball to center for his first save of the year.
Wolfe went 2-3 and scored three times for the Pride. Taylor Kennedy added two RBI and a double.
Guilford banged out a season-high 17 hits, but stranded 10 runners. Schlesinger, John, Spector and Phil Drew had three hits apiece. John, the reigning Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Week, extended his hitting streak to nine games.
