Ferrum Defeats Guilford 11-1 in Baseball

FERRUM, Va. (3/14/07) -- Third baseman Brett Thomas clubbed a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to help Ferrum to an 11-1 non-conference baseball win this afternoon at home over Guilford College.

Outfielder Brent Sowers got things started for the Panthers in the bottom of the first inning when he singled, stole second and third, then scored on a wild pitch. Sowers went 4-4 this afternoon with four runs, three stolen bases and an RBI. His three stolen bases ties the Panthers' single-game record. Thus far, he has been successful on 21-of-23 stolen base attempts in '07 and leads the team with a .422 batting average.

Guilford scored its lone run in the second inning when third baseman Zack Schlesinger singled, advanced on a walk and a hit batter, the scored on a fielder's choice by outfielder Ben Bizier.

Ferrum picked up three more runs in the third inning, four in the fourth and three more in the sixth. In 76 at-bats this season, Thomas is batting .408 with three doubles, three triples, six homers and 28 RBI.

Senior designated Ben Walton went 3-5 with three RBI, two runs, and a stolen base.

Senior Jimmy Holm (3-1) pitched seven innings for this win this afternoon. Holm allowed three hits and one earned run, struck out three and walked two.

Guilford (5-11) was led offensively by shortstop Drew Ward, who went 2-4. Starting pitched Jared Via (0-1) absorbed the loss for the Quakers. He allowed nine hits and eight runs, all earned, over four innings and walked three of the 17 batters he faced.

Ferrum (11-8) returns to action March 17-18 with a pair of USA South games at home against Shenandoah University. Guilford hosts Villa Julie Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
