Danville, Va. (3/2/07) -- The Averett University baseball team defeated the Quakers of Guilford College for the second time this season, bringing the Cougars record to 14-3. The Cougars topped the Quakers 6-1 on Thursday at Owen-Fulton Field.
Averett managed the win with strong pitching by freshman Ahmed Shelton, and sharp hitting by the Cougars. Shelton completed the game, allowing one run and only six hits with four strikeouts.
Averett struck first in the game, scoring a run in the third inning. Jeremiah McMillan led off the inning with a single, and then the Quakers second baseman committed an error, allowing T.J. Bray to reach and McMillan to score. The Quakers were upset over the score, and came back in the next inning to score a run of their own on two doubles, bringing the score to 1-1.
Averett split the game open however in the bottom half of the fourth, scoring three runs on two hits. A leadoff walk put Joey Garry on base, McMillan hit a single to reach, and Eric Sibrizzi started the scoring with an RBI single through the right side. The Cougar's next two runs came off a fielder's choice hit by John Lesueur, and a sacrifice fly by Pierce Steinruck.
AU managed two more runs in the game, and shut the Quakers down for the remainder, bringing the final score to 6-1.
On the day for the Cougars, McMillan hit 3-for-4 with two runs, and Steinruck was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Garry was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, and Sibrizzi hit 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. For the Quakers, Joe John was 2-for-4 with one run, and Phil Drew was 2-for-2 with an RBI.
