Drew's RBI Hit Lifts Guilford to 10-9 Win Over Piedmont

Greensboro, N.C. (2/11/07) -- Phil Drew's two-out single in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Ben Bizier from second base and gave Guilford a 10-9 win over visiting Piedmont Sunday afternoon at McBane Field. The Quakers' second one-run win over the Lions in as many days gives them a sweep of the season series and moves their record to 2-1. Piedmont drops to 0-3.

Piedmont jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Evan Nissley's two-out, three-run homer to left in the bottom of the first inning. Guilford got two runs back in the home first on RBI hits by Chad Boone and Alex Starbuck. The Quakers' tied the game in the bottom of the second on Bizier's sacrifice squeeze bunt that scored Ian Spector.

After both teams scored two third-inning runs, Guilford grabbed a 6-3 lead with three in the fifth inning off of reliever John Vohlken. The Quakers took advantage of four Piedmont walks in the inning and got an RBI double from John Goodwin and another successful squeeze bunt by Bizier.

Stan Brosko's one-out single in the top of the seventh inning off of Jared Via made it a one-run game. Guilford answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh thanks to Spector's run-scoring double, but the Lions tied the game for the third and final time in the top of the eighth inning on J.J. McCay's two-out double.

Guilford nearly won the game in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Jared Moon cut down Starbuck trying to score from second base on Goodwin's two-out single to right field.

Andrew McClannon (1-0) yielded a one-out single in the top of the 10th, but retired the Lions' number-two and number-three hitters on fly balls. Spector started the home 10th with his third hit of the game, a single to right field. B.J. Hampton retired Guilford lead-off man Joe John on a popup and induced Bizier into a fielder's choice, but Bizier stole second and took third on a wild pitch. Boone drew a two-out walk that was followed by Drew's game-winning hit, his only one in six at-bats.

The Bluefield State orginally scheduled for Tuesday (2/13) has been reschedule for Sunday Feb. 25 at 2:00 p.m. Guilford returns to action Saturday (2/17) when it hosts Neumann at 2:00 p.m.
