Ashland, VA -- Two dominant pitching performances resulted in Guilford and Randolph-Macon splitting an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Day Field. Guilford's Dave Whigham (Ocean City, MD/Decatur) tossed a complete-game, four-hit shutout in the Quakers' 5-0 opening-game win. Randolph-Macon's Travis Beazley (Beaverdam, VA/Patrick Henry) tossed eight strong innings and Bo Garner (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) delivered his first college save in the Yellow Jackets' 7-4 victory in the nightcap.
Rob Bittner's (Wilmington, DE/Salesianum) team-high fifth homer of the year to lead off the second inning was all the offense Whigham needed in the opener, but Andrew Lerner (Tallahassee, FL/Florida State University School (Florida Tech)) added a two-run blast in the Quakers' four-run frame that helped Guilford (11-10, 3-3 ODAC) take a 4-0 lead. Whigham scattered four hits, walked three, hit one and fanned a personal-best eight batters in the first collegiate complete game.
Josh Miller's (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) two-run single in the fifth inning helped Guilford tie the nightcap at 3-3, but Beazley settled down and the Yellow Jackets (6-8, 1-3 ODAC) went ahead with two runs in the sixth and single tallies in the seventh and eighth innings off of Guilford hurlers Logan Collier (Rural Hall, NC/North Forsyth) and Matt Spoerlein (Jamestown, NC/SW Guilford). Guilford scored a run in the top of the ninth before loading the bases with nobody out, but Garner induced Miller into a fly-ball out. Brian Burton (Ahoskie, NC/Hertford County) followed with a game-ending double play. Beasley worked eight innings and fanned seven for his second win of the season.
Randolph-Macon entertains Tufts Sunday (3/20) at 1:00 p.m. before the Jumbos continue south for a 2:30 p.m. matchup with Guilford at McBane Field Monday (3/21).
