Ferrum, VA – Visiting Guilford scored four runs in the top of the 10th inning and senior Dave Shaffer held Ferrum scoreless in the bottom frame for a 13-9 Quakers' baseball win over the Panthers Wednesday night.
Ferrum (12-8-1) grabbed a 4-1 lead after three innings against Guilford's Scottie Wilcox, who made his first college start. The Quakers (15-11) answered with a run in the fourth and took a 5-4 edge with three runs in the fifth, but the Panthers tied the game again with a single run in the sixth against Guilford's Mike Balash. The contest featured three ties, the last of which came when Ferrum scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning off of Shaffer.
Chad Boone (Winston-Salem, NC/W. Forsyth) and Travis Clodfelter (Archdale, NC/Trinity) paced the Quakers' 20-hit attack with four hits apiece. Boone had a double and three runs batted in (RBI). Clodfelter had two doubles and two RBI. Rob Bittner also doubled twice and finished with three hits.
Brett Thomas went 5-5 with two doubles and an RBI for Ferrum. Matt Gammon added three hits and three RBI.
Guilford hosts Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Hampden-Sydney Saturday (4/2) in a doubleheader at noon.
