Atlanta, GA – Guilford's baseball team improved to 3-1 Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of host Oglethorpe. The contests marked the Stormy Petrels' (0-2) first games of the season.
Sophomore Dave Whigham (Ocean City, MD/Decatur) threw four and a third innings and junior Chris Raines (Roxboro, NC/Person) picked up the save in the Quakers' 2-1 opening-game win. Freshman Fred Parent's (Winston-Salem, NC/Mt. Tabor) second-inning sacrifice fly and junior Rob Bittner's (Wilmington, DE/Salesianum) run-scoring single in the third accounted for Guilford's runs.
Bittner and Parent both hit two-run homers in the nightcap's sixth inning as the Quakers used a five-run frame to break open a 2-2 game. Parent's blast marked the first of his college career. Bittner also doubled and finished with three hits and three runs batted in. Sophomore Logan Collier (Rural Hall, NC/N. Forsyth) improved to 2-0 with his second win in five days. He entered the game in the fifth inning in relief of junior starter Matt Spoerlein (Jamestown, NC/Southwest Guilford).
The Quakers seek their fourth straight win Wednesday (2/16) with a 2:00 p.m. home contest against Averett.
