Salem, VA (04/07/03) -- Guilford senior Luke Kempton (Greensboro, NC/Page) earned the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's (ODAC) Baseball Player of the Week Award for the week of March 31. A first-time winner, Kempton joins classmate Brad Franklin (Greensboro, NC/Southern Guilford) as Guilford's two recipients of this year's weekly prizes.

Kempton, a 6-0, 185-pound first baseman, hit .727 (8-11) with eight runs scored in Guilford's 2-1 week. He went 2-4 with three runs scored in the Quakers' 7-2 ODAC win at Roanoke April 2. He was 6-7 in Guilford's doubleheader split with visiting conference-rival Hampden-Sydney April 5. Kempton had three hits in each game and scored twice in Guilford's 8-6 win in the opener and crossed the plate three times in the nightcap, an 11-9 Quakers' loss.

A left-handed hitter, Kempton stands fifth among Guilford's regulars with a .364 batting average. He leads the team with 23 walks, a .479 on-base percentage and seven sacrifice hits. His 37 runs stand second on the club and he also has 18 runs batted in (RBI). Kempton climbed some of Guilford's career statistical lists last week and is ranked second in runs (149), third in walks (87), fourth in hits (185) and ninth in RBI (97). He needs 10 hits, 11 runs and eight walks to become Guilford's career leader in each category.

Coach Gene Baker's Quakers (21-11, 8-5 ODAC) start the week third in the ODAC standings and have won five of their last six games. Guilford visits nationally ranked Ferrum Thursday (4/9) in a nonconference tilt before facing league-rival Emory & Henry in a doubleheader Saturday (4/12) at noon.
