Harrisonburg, VA (03/03/03) -- Mike Goettler pitched a three-hit shutout in the opener and Brad Franklin (Greensboro, NC/Southern Guilford) hit for the cycle in the nightcap as visiting Guilford swept an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader from Eastern Mennonite Sunday.

The wins extend Guilford's (12-3, 2-0 ODAC) winning streak to seven games. Eastern Mennonite (3-11, 0-2 ODAC) played eight games in six days in Sarasota, FL, before returning home Saturday.

Jeff Roberts (Browns Summitt, NC/RCC) plated Brian Slate (Thomasville, NC/Wesleyan Academy) with a single in the second inning to give Goettler all the offense he needed to improve to 4-0. Goettler took a perfect game into the fifth inning before the leadoff batter reached on a dropped third strike. Casey Severs delivered the Royals' first hit later in the frame but was later thrown out at home by Franklin. With runners on the corners and two outs, Cole Thornton got caught in a rundown between first and second, but was tagged out before Sean Berry, the runner at third, crossed the plate.

Guilford added two unearned runs in the seventh when the Royals committed two of their four errors.

The second game looked like another a pitchers' duel until Guilford erupted for 10 runs in the top of the sixth inning off of starter Ryan Martin. Slate and Jake Lubel delivered two-run singles in the frame, which Franklin capped with a two-out grand slam, his team-leading fifth homer of the season.

Sophomore Dave Shaffer took a shutout into the sixth inning, but was lifted for rookie Matt Spoerlein (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford) when the Royals put three of their first four batters on base in the sixth inning.

Slate and Franklin each finished 4-6 with five RBI for the Quakers. Luke Kempton (2-6, 2 runs), A.J. McCauley (2-4, 2 RBI) and Josh Miller (2-4) added two hits apiece.

Guilford hosts Southern Virginia Tuesday (03/11) at 1:00 pm.
