  • Led the Quakers’ basketball team in scoring in the 1954-55 and 1955-56 seasons.
  •   26.4 points per game average from the 1955-56 campaign remains a Guilford College record. 
  •  Played for Coach David Meredith, a 1997 inductee into Guilford's Athletics Hall of Fame. 
  • After graduation, the Asheboro, NC, resident embarked on a successful high school coaching career in which he coached three state championship basketball teams. 
  • Was voted among the top 10 most outstanding athletes in Surry (NC) County and received Coach of the Year recognition from the Surry County and Asheboro school systems.
  • Atkins’ daughter, Cyd Atkins Leahy ‘78, received the first athletic scholarship given to a woman by Guilford College in 1974 following a standout basketball and tennis career at Asheboro (NC) High School.
