CATCHING UP WITH DANA WASKIEWICZ '18

What were some key reasons you decided to attend Guilford?

I attended Guilford to gain a liberal arts education and to compete at the collegiate level. I chose Guilford because it offered a health sciences major and the girls on the soccer team made me feel welcome on my visit. I knew this was a team I would fit in with and belong to a family.

What were some factors that helped you realize the success you enjoyed as a student at Guilford?

Being a part of the Honors Program while at Guilford pushed me to my fullest academic potential by completing a thesis in biology my senior year with the help of my advisors Anne Glenn and Melanie Lee-Brown.

What were some things about Guilford that helped you realize the success you enjoyed as an athlete?

The success I enjoyed as an athlete came from competing every day at practice or in the weight room and making life-long friends on the field. Sure, there were certain games I remember the most, but to me, it was the everyday grind and commitment that made us successful.

What have you been up to since you left Guilford?

Currently, I am in my first year of a Master’s program in physician assistant studies at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Florida. I plan to graduate in December 2021.

How has Guilford prepared you for where you are today?

Guilford has definitely prepared me academically for this challenge. I was able to participate in internships for credit that led me to pursue my goal of becoming a physician’s assistant.

What about your experience as a Guilford student-athlete has helped you the most?

My experience as a student-athlete has prepared me with practicing good time-management skills, the willingness to work hard every day, and the ability to cooperate as a team in my cohort of fellow PA students.

What do you miss most about Guilford?

I miss the people! There were so many welcoming and friendly faces.

What are your future plans?

After graduation, I plan to work as a PA in Florida (not sure on my specialty yet) and then maybe one day return to North Carolina.

What is one thing a high school student-athlete considering college needs to know?

Being a good teammate is just as important as being a good player.

Identify and describe one or two of your favorite moments or experiences while at Guilford.

I enjoyed away games and the tailgates we would have after with so much good food and many family members, friends, and dogs present. They are my favorite memories when it comes to playing college soccer.
