Volleyball Comeback Stalls in 3-1 Loss at Meredith
RALEIGH, N.C. - Meredith College held on for a 3-1 volleyball win over visiting Guilford College Wednesday night. The Avenging Angels moved to 4-2 with a 25-22, 25-18, 24-26, 25-22 victory in Weatherspoon Gym.
The first two sets were quite tight as neither squad led by more than three points until Meredith finished the second set on a 7-2 run. The Quakers staved off two match points in the third set and went on for a 26-24 win. Guilford had a 13-11 lead in the fourth set, but Meredith rallied with a 6-2 spurt that sent them onto victory.
Cori Spade led all students with 20 kills, 21 digs and five aces for Meredith. Teammate Anna Hayes added 11 kills on .310 hitting. Molly Markley was strong up from with eight kills and a game-high five blocks. Clarke Glendenning and Kara Baughman combined for 45 assists. The Avenging Angels had 12 service aces in the match.
Guilford senior Mary Moody put away 14 kills and had 13 digs. Classmates Emma Gunn and Laura Kopald both added 11 kills from the front line, while Taylor Phillips made 21 digs on defense. Kaci Chriscoe added 15 pickups and successfully fielded 24 serves for a 1.000 serve receive percentage. Taylor Whitley had a match-high 38 assists, plus two aces and five kills.
The Quakers open play in a two-day tournament hosted by Greensboro College Friday (9/10) at noon versus the host Pride in Hanes Gym.
