MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Cheyenne Wright set Guilford College's record in the 400 meters to highlight Friday's opening day of competition at the non-scoring East Tennessee State Track & Field Invitational. The Quakers are the lone NCAA Division III team competing in the predominantly Division I and Division II field.

Wright, a sophomore, placed fifth in her heat and 39th overall in one minute, 6.76 seconds. She lowered the standard of 1:07.17 set in December 2014 by Tess Stryk '16. Wright was one of four Quakers in the 200-meter dash where she posted the school's second-fastest time in school history (29.22) in her 90th-place performance. Teammate Alexus Newkirk finished six spots behind Wright with the eighth-fastest time in Guilford history.

Newkirk paced the Quakers in the 60 meters with a time of 8.78 seconds that placed 58th in the field and ranks seventh in school history. Teammate Kayla Scott wasn't far behind in 60th place with the 11th-best clocking all-time (8.80).

Senior Sommer Fanney continued her assault on the Quakers' 800-meter records in her season debut. The holder of Guilford's three-fastest times in the race posted the fourth-best time Friday with a 2:33.86 that placed fourth in her second and 30th in the 66-runner field.

Chantell Cooper turned in another top result for the Quakers with a 9.06-meter leap in the triple jump. The distance matches the third-best in school history and placed 31st in the field.

The two-day competition concludes Saturday (1/13).
